* * * *

Matt sat on the bed and gripped his hand under the sheet trying to make it cooperate. The day had been hard and frustrating. He felt like he should remember the man who stayed. Ing-something, he thought. But that was all he remembered. The man made him comfortable, made him feel safe. That’s why he wanted him to stay. The rest of it he was not so sure of.

He understood what they said. He had an accident. The doctors had asked him so many questions it made his head fuzzier than it already had been. They had run tests, shined lights into his eyes, and poked him so many times he wanted to scream out for the man to make them go away. Something inside of him said the man would make them leave if he asked.

He ran his fingers over the shirt he wore, it felt soft and for some reason felt…right. He tried to twist the seam in his fingers, but his right hand refused to grip it. He had been trying all day with no luck. He felt frustrated and angry each time his damn hand refused to move. Worse than that were the times he thought he might remember something. Each time he felt a thought coming to him it would float away just before he could grasp it.

After a few minutes the dark-haired man came back, his deep green eyes focusing right on Matt. It felt right, that’s the only thing he knew. Something about this man felt so right it almost hurt. He just wished he remembered more, wished he could make the words in his head focus enough to come out his mouth. He wanted to ask the man to tell him everything, to help him remember. But again, the words failed him. Frustration boiled inside of him and knew he would simply burst from it.

He looked up and watched as the man straightened a few things in the room. He worried the man was going to leave him, but he watched, and soon the man started laying a blanket over the chair next to his bed. Matt knew then that he wouldn’t be left alone.

Soon Matt heard the chair scoot closer, and the man rested his large feet on the end of the bed near Matt’s own feet. Matt tried to find his words, but they floated just out of his reach. He eventually quit trying and decided to try a physical action. He moved his useless hand over to the man and hoped with every breath that the man would hold it and not notice that Matt couldn’t grip it back.

His wish was answered as the man’s large, warm hand enveloped his own and squeezed. Matt tried to squeeze back, but nothing happened. His had just sat there. He frowned as he looked at it.

“Is your hand bothering you?” the man asked.

Ing-something, he knew it. The word was so close he could almost feel it like a caress. He knew the name, but the stupid thing refused to show itself to him.
